It all started with tractors. Yes, you read that correctly, technically Lamborghini began in 1948 as Lamborghini Trattori, an Italian tractor manufacturer founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini, who also started Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A. in 1963. Ferruccio Lamborghini studied at the Fratelli Taddia technical institute prior to getting drafted as a mechanic in the Italian Royal Air Force. After that he worked as a mechanic and engineer and eventually started his own business using former military vehicles to create agricultural equipment and tractors.

Ferrari and Lamborghini are now direct competitors, but it wasn’t always that way. Ironically prior to making his Italian luxury sportscar empire, Ferruccio Lamborghini owned a Ferrari which was considered one of the top cars at the time. He began experiencing mechanical difficulties with his Ferrari’s clutch and discovered that Ferrari used a tractor clutch. After personally trying to get the short-tempered Enzo Ferrari to remedy the issue and confronting him about using tractor parts, the two had a bit of a disagreement. Ferruccio Lamborghini then decided to start his own rival sports car company and even hired a former top Ferrari engineer. In 1963, Automobili Lamborghini was officially established in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. That same year they debuted their first car, the Lamborghini 350 GTV, a two-seater coupe with a V12 engine and the rest is pretty much history.

With such a unique story of origin and strong mechanical foundation, it is clear why Lamborghinis hold such an elite status. The company has preserved for over fifty years and surely will thrive far into the future with elegance, craftsmanship, and a desire for comfort, safety, and speed.
